2017 Kicker Rankings

This week we wrap up our fantasy football positional rankings with a look at the position we all love to hate – Kickers. Join Andy Germani, Tommy Landseadel, Joe Mica, Dan Marcus and Neil Schnurbach as they help you prepare for your rapidly approaching football drafts.

Kickers are the redheaded stepchild of fantasy football. They are generally ignored, and most experts will advise you to take one with your very last pick in any draft. The logic behind this is that kicker scoring is difficult to predict from week to week and not many points differentiate the elite kickers from the middle of the pack. You may not necessarily agree with this, but we will get to that in a moment. First, three things to consider when targeting your kicker:

1. Quality of the kicker: Are they accurate? Will they be given ample opportunity to attempt long field goals?

2. Scoring potential of the offense: A top kicker doesn’t always need to be tied to a juggernaut, but the offense needs to be able to move the ball. Bad offenses often fail to generate enough scoring chances for the kicker.

3. Quality of the team: Game flow matters. Teams that are winning are likely to continue attempting field goals throughout the game. Teams that are losing are more likely to go for it on 4th down instead of kicking the field goal. You want a kicker from a good team.

These three items are equally important. While nobody would ever advise you to reach early for a kicker, it might consider a mistake to wait until the last round. Most owners are highly active to start the year, and many have never gone into week-1 of the season with the same team they drafted. There is always a hot pick up or two that emerge as pre-season action winds down. Who is the player that gets dropped to accommodate the add? Easy, it is your last position player drafted.

That is why you can make an argument it makes little sense to draft your defense and kicker in the last two rounds. Your last position player is almost always going back to the waiver wire. Why not take your defense in round 12 and your kicker in the second to last round? That way, you will land an above average kicker and you don’t really sacrifice anything of value. Just something to consider.

All of our rankings assume standard scoring:

  • Extra point = 1
  • Field Goal 1-49 = 3
  • Field Goal 50+ = 5

Without further ado, let’s check out the ranks! N/R denotes a non ranking for that particular player.

In addition to the kickers above there were eight players that appeared on just one list. That basically covers kickers from every NFL team except the Bears, Dolphins, Jaguars, Rams and 49ers. Chandler Catanzaro was the only one to draw a ranking in the top-10. The other seven players, Ryan Succop, Kai Forbath, Randy Bullock, Harrison Butker, Younghoe Koo, Zan Gonzalez and Mike Nugent, all received a ranking in the 15-20 range. These players should not be drafted or considered in league with 14 or fewer teams.
