Paul previews today’s game action and shares his top Draft Kings plays for September 24th.
Today we have 12 games on the MLB schedule starting at 3:10 pm. As always, double-check your lineup prior to the start of each contest for any late scratches and be sure to check the weather report before game time for potential delays or cancellations. There doesn’t appear to be any games in danger of being postponed today.
When Jim agreed to write for me on Sunday, I thought I was going to get a nice easy short-schedule day today. What I ended up with was the 2015 Guide of Who’s Who in Major League Starting Pitching. I’ve listed 8 SP below, but did not even include Michael Wacha, Johhny Cueto, Michael Pineda, or Patrick Corbin. It’s not that I dislike these arms, but I would rank them a little lower based on recent performance or the inability to go deep in games. Nonetheless, there are plenty of big names to choose from as well as some lower-priced options to fill things out. Here are the players that have caught my eye the most for today’s contests:
|Kershaw is striking out a third of all batters and has a QS in 20 of last 21 GS. The D’Backs rocked him in only game facing him this year in April.|
|Opponents are hitting .200 vs MadBum in 2nd half, striking out nearly 30%. Padres are bottom third offensively this month.|
|Yankees are tough on LHP and Sale hasn’t been as dominant in the second half, but he has held current Yanks to a .123 AVG in 65 PA.
|I like Matz an awful lot, but he has a 3.99 xFIP vs a 1.80 ERA and the Reds hit lefties better than righties. $10K seems high.
|Kennedy has a 28% K rate since August 1st and has a 2.38 ERA in his last 9 home starts. 11-6, 2.73 ERA lifetime vs Giants.|
|Cosart is 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA vs the Phils this year. He has a 1.72 ERA this month and a 1.93 ERA at home this year.|
|Seven of Hamels last eight starts have been quality. He also has 37 K in his last 36 innings of work.
|Another risky play, but Miley has had success vs Rays with 2 QS this year and a 3-1, 1.85 ERA overall. 3/3 in QS this month.|
|Murphy has hit two home runs since Friday as he’s earning more playing time with Nick Hundley on the DL.
|Gomes is heating up while Gibson has a 5.10 ERA in the second half. Gomes is also 5-9 with 2 HR lifetime against Gibson.
|C||Buster Posey||Ian Kennedy||$4,100||★★★|
|Posey is locked in right now, hitting .373 in September with 12 BB and just 5 K. He’s also 17-44 lifetime against Kennedy.|
|C||Francisco Cervelli||Chad Bettis
|Cervelli is hitting .309 with a .392 OBP in the second half, while Bettis has a home ERA of 5.20.|
|1B/3B||Pedro Alvarez||Chad Bettis
|I don’t care where you play him, but Alvarez needs to get into your lineup today at this price. 4 HR this month; 22 YTD vs RHP.|
|1B/C||Wilin Rosario||Jeff Locke
|A great price for Rosario who appears to be playing vs LHP only. Hit a HR last night against LHP J.A. Happ.|
|1B||Justin Bour||Alec Asher||$3,400||★★★★|
|LHH are hitting .375 with a .641 SLG vs Asher, while Bour has hit all 18 of his HR against RHP.|
|A great value at $4,000, Walker has all 14 of his HR vs RHP, has 4 HR this month and a 12:13 BB to K ratio.|
|Murphy hit his 3rd HR of the month last night and has 12 vs RHP this year. Smith allows LH to hit .345/.513/.759 this year.|
|2B||Robinson Cano||Johnny Cueto
|Cano is hitting .329 with 13 HR in the second half. He has a .295/.352/.474 line against RHP this year.|
|2B/3B||Josh Harrison||Chad Bettis||$4,000||★★★|
|Harrison had a pair of hits last night, bringing his average in September up to .317. With his added eligibility, he’s a nice option.|
|This is a reduced price for Arenado as he’s listed as day-to-day. He’s had success against Locke and hits LHP well at home.|
|Frazier is heating back up with 5 HR this month and an .813 OPS. He hit a HR vs Matz already this year and has a .946 OPS vs LHP|
|Carpenter hit 2 HR last night and now has 17 in the second half. Jungmann has hit the proverbial wall, with a 6.97 Sept ERA.|
|Mercer has 12 hits (incl. 3 last night) in 23 at bats since Kang went down. He’s better vs LHP, but good price for hot hand in Coors.|
|Two players whose seasons are going in opposite directions. Gibson with a 5.1o ERA; Lindor hitting .354 with 8 HR.|
|SS||Tim Beckham||Wade Miley||$2,700||★★|
|Beckham is hitting LHP for some power (.505 SLG), and in his last start hit a HR against Drew Smyly. A solid punt play for SS.|
|OF||A.McCutchen, S.Marte, G.Polanco||Chad Bettis
|All solid plays against the Rockies RHP in Coors. Polanco is a fair bit cheaper but he’s very good against LHP.|
|OF||C.Gonzalez, C.Blackmon, C.Dickerson||Jeff Locke||$3,800-5,100||★★★|
|I like Dickerson the best of the three. He’s the cheapest but best against LHP and he’s 1-2 with a HR vs Locke.|
|OF||Ender Inciarte||Clayton Kershaw
|I wouldn’t go so far as recommending Inciarte today, but it’s worth noting that he’s 4-7 with a BB and a SB vs Kershaw.|
|OF||Bryce Harper||Tyler Wilson||$5,900||★★★★|
|Harper has a 1.500 OPS in September and has 34 HR vs RHP YTD. Wilson is a GB machine, but not sure that’s going to save him.|
|OF||Michael Conforto||Josh Smith
|Smith might be the worst pitcher in baseball against LHH, while Conforto has a .931 OPS vs RHP.|
|Asher has a 9.78 ERA through 4 starts, allowing LHH to bat .375 against him. Yelich is hitting .324 in the second half.|
|Any time you can get Cain in your lineup vs a LHP with his .969 OPS, you should do it.|
|OF||Brandon Guyer||Wade Miley
|Guyer is 3-10 lifetime against Miley with a HR, and is hitting LHP very well this year with a .833 OPS.|
|OF||Chris Young||Chris Sale||$2,300||★★|
|A tough assignment for the LHP-killer, but for a punt play I like it. Young is hitting .324/.390/.581 vs LHP this year.|
