2014 Rest of Season Top 150 Hitters

We’re a little past the half way mark in baseball so it’s time to take stock in what players have done in the first half and predict what they’ll do in the future.  Each Assembly member was asked to rank their top 150 hitters going forward.  We then took those rankings and consolidated them in the hopes to give you an idea of whom to look for in the second half.  Players ranked with an N/R did not make a particular writers top 150.  We’ve listed an additional 38 hitters after the top 150 so you can see some of the lower rated players that were only ranked by a few of our writers.  To see the top 100 pitchers for the second half, click here.

Note that these rankings were done a week in advance.  Any injuries/demotions that occurred between then and now were not taken into account.  If you see such a player (Yadier Molina for example), feel free to inquire about them in the comments section below.

49 Alex Rios 47 47 80 48 29 53
50 Gregory Polanco 50 46 25 52 71 65

Most of the players in the top 50 were ranked in or around 50, but there are some notable exceptions.  Several people don’t believe Matt Carpenter belongs in the top 50 and if Rob had his way he would be closer to 100.  While David Wright’s value varies from man to man, Paul does not believe he belongs in the top 50 (and neither do Albert Pujols and Alex Rios).  Peter & Kevin decided to tag team on Carlos Gonzalez, neither one has any faith in the man.  While some may be down on Jason Kipnis and Joey Votto, Jim cares for them the least.  Tommy has some players he ranks higher than most, but Brandon Moss looks to be the player he loves the least in the top 50.

99 Evan Gattis 102 109 98 108 115 76
100 Martin Prado 105 65 102 86 113 147

Allen Craig is the one stand out here as he is the first and only player ranked in the top 100 that didn’t make it onto all 6 lists.  In fact, you have to go all the way down to #116 to find another player not ranked on all 6 lists.  Tommy is down on Martin Prado & Pablo Sandoval to the point they barely rank in the top 150 let along to 100.  Jim thinks Dee Gordon & Ryan Zimmerman deserve more credit than everyone else is giving them.  Paul was the man who abandoned Allen Craig in the rankings, but he also has little use for Howie Kendrick and Josh Hamilton.  Kevin may like Starling Marte & Carlos Santana, but he doesn’t believe they belong in the top 100.  Pete is high on Jason Heywood and is the only one that has him ranked inside the top 40.  Rob has little faith in Starlin Castro with 31 points separating his rank from the second highest, but Adrian Gonzalez & Matt Holliday are in his good graces.

Here is where opinions really start to vary.  The consensus was that only 18 of the 50 players listed belonged in the top 150.  There were 9 players that made 5 of the 6 lists and another 9 that only made it onto 4 of the 6.  That leaves 14 players that were left off 3 or more lists and were lucky to make it into the top 150.  Tommy was the most consistent with only 9 players in the top 150 unranked.  Kevin has 15 players ranked below 150 that he believes deserve more love.

Some of the most notable discrepancies are Pete with his 68 ranking of Asdrubal Cabrera, Paul with Curtis Granderson at 60, Tommy’s Wil Myers ranking of 85, Joe Mauer at 75 for Rob, Jim has Josh Willingham at 88 and Kevin with Brad Miller at 74.

The final group of players would essentially be the guys taken in rounds 13 or later.  The first 10 to 12 rounds of a draft are used to build your core unit; once you get to this point, it comes down to personal opinions and preferences so take this part of the rankings with a grain of salt.  If we had ranked more than 150 players you would probably see the positioning of these players change.  Since we did not, just use this portion as a reference of names to consider for the other half of your roster.

Be sure to check back next week as Paul Hartman will have his updated dynasty league rankings.

  1. Good stuff, guys; looks like after a handful, SS is a crapshoot position. I really liked Brad Miller and Jed Lowrie’s chances this year. Especially Miller; big disappointment.
